As you are drifting off to sleep every night, fire safety is probably the furthest thing from your mind. Approximately 360 people die each year from mattress fires according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bearing this in mind, the statistics show you may want to reconsider your sleeping arrangements and re-visit your insurance policies.
Since July 2007, mattress sets are required to meet federal safety standard for open-flame fire resistance that could save your life and your loved ones. Protection from cigarette ignition has been in place for over 30 years. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rules give you and your family more time to escape before the fire gets out of control. Many of the mattress fires are started by children playing with open flames such as candles, lighters or matches.
Recognized as a leading cause of death for children, mattress fires can be caused by any number of things so it is necessary to take strict safety precautions:
• Don't smoke in bed, better yet, stop smoking
• Be careful where you place candles
• Blow out all candles before going to sleep
• Don't allow children to play with candles, matches or lighters
• Install fire alarms in all bedrooms
• Change the batteries in smoke alarms at least once a year
Take few minutes and check the label on your mattresses to see how safe they are. It might be time for an upgrade to help keep you and your loved ones sleeping safely.
As always, we are if you have any questions. We will sleep better knowing you are sleeping safely!
